The Climate Change Department

The Climate Change Department handles the following responsibilities:

1- Adopt policies, strategic plans, and executive programs that aim to lower the level of climate change-causing emissions. Such policies should be enacted on the long term in coordination with the relevant bodies, while taking into consideration how to adopt with their effects.

2- Develop guides, guidelines, and performance indicators on programs and projects focused around clean development, as well as projects to mitigate and cope with the effects of climate change.

3- Coordinate with the relevant bodies to implement in order to implement programs and projects that aim to reduce carbon emissions, as well as projects to cope with the effects of climate change. To that end, the Department is responsible for following up on such projects and submitting regular reports on their progress.

4- Implement and uphold the national strategy on climate change and any obligations in accordance with international treaties on climate change and the protocols and international plans put in place in that context, with submitting regular reports on this matter.

5- Supervise the mechanisms and optional programs included in the treaties on climate change and the their protocols. Furthermore, partake in raising community-wide environmental awareness on the subject of climate change/

6-Cooperate and coordinate with international bodies to take advantage of their programs, activities, and support in the framework of the treaties on climate change and their protocols in coordination with the relevant administrative units.

7-Make the necessary technical preparations for climate change conferences, including referring any reports, decisions, and themes that can be discussed in coordination with the ‘Committee on Climate Change and Clean Development’ as well as the relevant bodies.

8- Partake in writing the annual reports on international indicators on climate change and environmental sustainability, and highlight the efforts made by the State of Qatar on the front of climate change at the international community level. Additionally, stay on top of the international indicators that affect Qatar’s ranking in relevant indexes.

9- Monitor the research and technological developments emerging in the field of environmental technology, and support the use of such technology for the sake of building capabilities in relation to environmental protection and environmental sustainability, and limit the effects of climate change in Qatar.

10- Partake in studies on climate change and the protection of the ozone lawyer, and establish appropriate requirements and conditions as relates to this goal in coordination with the relevant bodies.

11-Prepeare assessment studies on the fragility of ecosystems and infrastructures and their resilience to the effects and risks of climate change.

12- Manage climate change simulation programs and tie it to climate change indicators, while also building database on said indicators, in order to monitor and follow those indicators, as well as submit regular reports on this matter.

13- Update the national list on emitting greenhouse gases and develop a way to measure the quantity and type greenhouse gases in Qatar. To that end, the Department is also responsible for submitting regular reports on this issue in coordination with the relevant bodies.

14- Enhance the State of Qatar’s role in national, regional, and international bodies on climate change and environmental sustainability through providing technical information, reports, and scientific studies.
