The Wildlife Development Department

The Wildlife Development Department handles the following responsibilities:

1- Design plans and programs aimed at developing all resources that support biodiversity and the development of plant, animal, and marine wildlife, as well as natural resources in Qatar, in a way that ensures optimal utilization and environmental sustainability.

2- Implement programs and projects to develop, sustain, increase, and preserve all resources that support biodiversity and the development of plant, animal, and marine wildlife, as well as natural resources in Qatar in coordination with the relevant bodies. In this context, the Department is also responsible for submitting periodic reports on this matter.

3- Conduct studies and research in service of ensuring ecological balance for wildlife and biodiversity in Qatar, as well as implement programs to preserve species local to Qatar, and their homogeneity.

4- Implement programs to control the populations of wildlife beings and species that are alien to the local Qatari habitat, and study their impact on local environment.

5- Establish and maintain a database on biodiversity and wildlife in Qatar.

6- Propose legislative instruments to protect wildlife and biodiversity in a way that is harmonious with the requirements of development and environmental sustainability.

7- Stay on top of upholding the State of Qatar’s obligations to the regional and international protocols and agreements on biodiversity and wildlife.

8- Approve permits for importing, exporting, transporting, and the passage of endangered wildlife species and their products across borders in coordination with the relevant administrative units and government agencies. To this end, the Department is also responsible for establishing and maintaining a database on such permits.

9- Detect violations of the requirements of the permits issued for importing, exporting, transporting, and the passage of endangered wildlife beings and their products across borders. The Department is also responsible for reporting such violations to the relevant government agencies.

10- Conduct studies on environmental sites and identify the requirements of extracting natural resources, such as soil, mud, sand, stone and their derivatives in the State of Qatar. Accordingly, the Department is also responsible for enacting plans and programs to extract those resources in a responsible way, as well as identify the practices and operations needed for implementing said plans.

11- Evaluate permit applications for quarries and crushers, concrete mixer factories, and other similar operations and machineries, as well as the operations to extract and transfer construction sand. To that end, the Department is also responsible for issuing permits as per the locations and amounts it deems appropriate.

12- Carry out regular inspections of quarries, crushers, concrete mixer factors, and other similar operations and machineries, as well as the operations to extract and transfer construction sand. In this context, the Department is also responsible for detecting environmental violations, working on removing the roots of such violations in coordination with the relevant bodies, and submitting regular reports on such matters.
