Minister of Environment and Climate Change Launches Public Platform on Non-Ionizing Radiation

HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie launched a public platform on the non-ionizing radiation in the State of Qatar, through the Ministry’s official website.

Affiliated with the Radiation and Chemicals Protection Department, the platform aims to enhance the protection of citizens and residents from electromagnetic radiation emanating from electrical devices, radio, television, and cellular networks, by reducing emissions in accordance with international standards.

During the inauguration, HE Al Subaie was briefed on the work mechanisms of the non-ionizing radiation frequency analysis unit, and the important role of the national project for monitoring frequencies, which helps reduce radiation emissions in Qatar. His Excellency was also briefed on the integrated plan to monitor radiation levels, which measures the concentration of radiation and determines its sources and ensures that its levels do not exceed the permissible limits according to international standards.

On this occasion, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs, Abdul Hadi Nasser Al Marri, confirmed that the environment sector is continuously developing its tools and programs, which enables it to implement the operational plans included within the sustainable strategy of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, pointing in this aspect to the important role played by the non-ionizing radiation frequency analysis unit, by working to monitor any radioactive contamination in the State of Qatar, which contributes to the protection and sustainability of the Qatari environment.

He added that the unit supports the scientific orientation of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in all its paths and efforts to serve local environmental issues, as the unit contributed to the formation of an integrated database, which contributes to the study of non-ionizing radiation and its effects.

He pointed out that this initiative comes within the framework of achieving the goals of the Third National Development Strategy and the Qatar National Vision 2030.

For his part, Director of the Radiation and Chemicals Protection Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Eng. Abdul Rahman Al Abd Al Jabbar, said that the launch of the electromagnetic frequency monitoring unit platform is an important link in the series of the Ministrys efforts to maintain a safe and sustainable local environment, pointing to the important role that the administration plays in ensuring Air quality in Qatar.

He pointed out that the national project for monitoring non-ionizing radiation is the first of its kind in the GCC region and the Middle East. It is classified as one of the largest projects implemented globally in monitoring electromagnetic radiation, providing high-precision data on radiation levels in real-time through 60 fixed stations and 15 mobile devices, in addition to many accurate measuring devices.

Head of the Frequency Analysis Unit Eng Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Muhanna said the platform provides the public with a simple and easy vision to identify indicators for monitoring radiation levels through graphs in different colors. He said the monitoring system reaches 60 fixed stations in first phase, in addition to a number of mobile detection devices spread throughout the country.

Al Muhanna said these stations are able to identify radiation sources and ensure their levels within the permissible limits in accordance with international standards, and they also operate round the clock. He noted that the quarterly reports confirm that the levels of non-ionizing radiation are very low in Qatar compared to international standards.
