The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change organizes a workshop on the Basel Convention from 9 to 11 January 2024

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change organized this morning a workshop on the application and implementation of national plans for the transboundary movement and disposal of hazardous wastes under the Basel Convention, attracting experts from the National Center for Waste Management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The workshop, which will last for three days from 9 to 11 January 2024, was attended by a number of officials from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Municipality, Qatar Foundation, Qatar Energy, the General Authority of Customs, and a delegation of experts from the National Center for Waste Management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia consisting of: Dr. Nawaf bin Essam Plessi, Dr. Nasser bin Ahmed Mashain, and Ms. Hind bint Ibrahim Al Khathlan.

The workshop, organized by the Department of Chemicals and Hazardous Waste, in cooperation with the National Center for Waste Management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aimed to discuss the terms and obligations of the Basel Convention, the challenges faced by the transboundary movement of waste, as well as methods of preparing national reports, especially with the presence of many new issues that have been included in the agreement, as well as coordinating efforts in waste transport with the National Center for Waste Management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

On the other hand, Eng. Samira Mohammed Al Dosari, Officer in-Charge of Basel Convention in the Department of Chemicals and Hazardous Waste, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, stressed that the workshop comes in light of changes that have imposed many challenges and difficulties on us for the optimal application of the terms of the agreement, which drives us to the need for consultation and exchange of ideas, in a way that contributes to developing a common vision to reach best practices to enhance cooperation between the signatories to the agreement.

She pointed out that the workshop comes from the vision and belief of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in the importance of joint work, which will contribute to the exchange of ideas and experiences between the experts of the State of Qatar and the National Center for Waste Management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which will reflect positively in achieving these workshop objectives and coming up with distinguished recommendations based on science and knowledge to reach a common vision in modernizing mechanisms and methods of safe disposal of such waste.

In the same context, the participating delegation from the National Center for Waste Management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia conducted a session during which it reviewed the definition of all the provisions of the Basel Convention in terms of the basic objectives of the Convention, the obligations of the States parties and signatories to it, as well as the tasks of the Basel Convention regional centers, in addition to reviewing all the efforts made during the international commissions of the Convention.
